Every altar has a smell of incense with a scent that “purifies the souls of the dead.” During the Day of the Dead, participants burn incense or copal for their deceased loved ones. Pictured is a  man lighting incense in the spirit of the Day of the Dead, while a woman shines a light to help him see better in the dark.
