Over the summer, the Godinez Fundamental High School (GFHS) Environmental Club hosted several seminars discussing problems in our environment. It resulted in a leadership award from the Sierra Club.
The Sierra Club is an environmental organization that looks towards recognizing students and their great achievements to the environment. They believe that these seminars were a great inspiration.
President Anahi Castaneda received the plaque with her classmates for being a student organization that demonstrates environmental stewardship through their actions.
The seminars were hosted by the club in order to talk to officials. Officials included congress members: Maxine Waters, Katie Porter, Mike Levin, State Senator Josh Newman, and Assembly member Kevin Mullin. The seminars went over many problems that California has including plastic pollution in the ocean.
“It makes us want to do our best,” said Castaneda
Club advisor and science teacher, Barbara Apostol, believes that everything that is done in the club is meant to make a difference for themselves but also for their environment including the Godinez campus.
“Anybody can make a difference,” said Apostol.
That is the value of the environmental club.
Castaneda admittedly said that this adds pressure to the club to keep up the hard work.
She added, “Remember to recycle your plastic water bottles and paper in the blue bins around school.”
National Recycling Day is November 15 this year. The club plans to sell succulents on that day.

I am so glad that the ´´environmental club´´ has done something for our school and teaching us about the environment. They have taught us to recycle our water bottles and paper around the school. ´´The Sierra Club is an environmental organization that looks towards recognizing students and their great achievements to the environment´´, as this phrase says I am so proud of them and they deserve to be recognized because they are making our environment. I bet they DISDAIN when they see trash or something not being recycled! Dr. Apostal has taught us to recycle our paper by giving out cardboard boxes for recycling instead of throwing the paper away. The environment just needs a TINGE of love and everyone to care for it.

It’s amazing to know that PLETHORA of people want to help out with the environment. We can all help out by doing “recycle, reuse, and reduce” that way we find ways to make things work for most things if possible. The Earth is struggling with a lot of all sorts of trash and the environmental club helping out as much as they can is a VOROCIOUS difference that can be made. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” One piece of trash goes a long way even if it’s the smallest piece of trash so just by doing our part of not littering and picking up litter even if it’s not ours can really help out. Every person in the environmental club along with others that do it on their own already help out the world so much where we all stand on.
