Over the summer, the Godinez Fundamental High School (GFHS) Environmental Club hosted several seminars discussing problems in our environment. It resulted in a leadership award from the Sierra Club.

The Sierra Club  is an environmental organization that looks towards recognizing students and their great achievements to the environment. They believe that these seminars were a great inspiration.

President Anahi Castaneda received the plaque with her classmates for being a student organization that demonstrates environmental stewardship through their actions.

The seminars were hosted by the club in order to talk to officials. Officials included congress members: Maxine Waters, Katie Porter, Mike Levin, State Senator Josh Newman, and Assembly member Kevin Mullin. The seminars went over many problems that California has including plastic pollution in the ocean.

“It makes us want to do our best,” said Castaneda

Club advisor and science teacher, Barbara Apostol, believes that everything that is done in the club is meant to make a difference for themselves but also for their environment including the Godinez campus.

“Anybody can make a difference,” said Apostol.

That is the value of the environmental club.

Castaneda admittedly said that this adds pressure to the club to keep up the hard work.

She added, “Remember to recycle your plastic water bottles and paper in the blue bins around school.”

National Recycling Day is November 15 this year. The club plans to sell succulents on that day.
