The Los Angeles Lakers are taking on the Miami Heat in the 2020 NBA finals under quarantine.

This year’s playoffs are different from the past because there are no fans, teams don’t have to travel, teams stay in hotels near each other, and all games are hosted in one arena instead of two.

The continuation of the NBA takes place at the Disney World resort in Orlando, Florida. NBA players have been in a quarantine bubble where no one was allowed to go in or out. The entire season including the NBA finals are being held here because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lakers played the Heat starting on September 30. The Lakers look to continue their dominance into the championship while the Heat look to defeat it.

Assistant basketball coach at Godinez Fundamental High School, Israel Armenta, is an NBA fan.

“The Miami Heat are the perfect matchup for the Lakers with Jimmy Butler going against Lebron James,” said Armenta.

Jimmy Butler, a player with the Heat, will lead Miami to the NBA finals along with 20-year-old rookie, Tyler Herro. Butler and Herro have been a force to be reckoned with throughout the playoffs and are not slowing down.

Physical Education assistant teacher, Jose Uribe, believes that the Lakers are too powerful to be controlled with the two power houses, Anthony Davis and Lebron James.

Although this is Lebron James 10th career, finals appearance, it is his first appearance with the Lakers.

Many are rooting for the Lakers in support of the heart-breaking loss of Kobe Bryant this past January. The Lakers are wearing their Mamba Jerseys in honor of Bryant, which when wearing them have been undefeated.

“I’m not a huge Lakers fan but winning this championship would make Kobe proud, which is what we all wish for,” said senior David Ramirez.

As the NBA finals continue, both teams battle to be the team who will go down in history for winning under these unprecedented circumstances.

Game 5 of the finals is tonight at 6:00 p.m. and the Lakers hope to finish off the Heat.

If they win, The Lakers are dedicating their championship to Bryant.

Update: Miami Heat beat the Lakers 111-108. Game 6 will be played Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11 at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

Additional Update: Lakers beat the Heat 106-93 in the final championship game. The Los Angeles Lakers are the 2020 World Champions. No championship parade is planned due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
