Good sushi is hard to come by without having to pay an arm and a leg for it. Luckily, Yo! Sushi, on the corner of Fairview and Edinger in Santa Ana, includes many delicious dishes at very reasonable prices and it’s just a 10 min. walk from school.

Don’t let the name intimidate you. It really isn’t all about sushi. The restaurant has different varieties of foods such as bento boxes that include: teriyaki chicken, California roll, tempura vegetables, and seaweed salad. The menu also includes many sushi rolls to choose from. The portion of the food is also plentiful. It fills you up, but not too much and it still leaves room for dessert.

The place itself is somewhat small, but it makes your experience cozier while you’re enjoying your meal. We ordered: Yo! Sushi Roll,  California Roll, Teriyaki Chicken Bowl, and a Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll.

Yo! Sushi Roll

The Yo! Sushi roll has cucumber, crab meat, shrimp, tempura, and was topped with eel and salmon. The rolls cost $9.95 each.

Overall, the sushi was really good and tasted fresh. The eight pieces that they provide fills you up. Even if the roll included eel, you couldn’t really taste it, as the eel was also topped with avocado. Even though this roll can be a bit intimidating, we recommend you try it.

Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll

The Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll includes spicy tuna and cucumber and was also deep fried. It cost $9.95. The roll was delicious and it was very different from what I have tried before. It was something that I had never expected. The roll was pleasantly surprising. The texture of the food was a little strange to me it was crunchy and chewy at the same time. In the first bite of food, there is an immediate burst of flavors. It is almost sweet but with a tinge of spice. Even though the word tuna is in the name you really can’t taste it.

Teriyaki Chicken Bowl

The Teriyaki Chicken Bowl is also delicious. This bowl is such an adventure it has chicken, rice, pineapple at the very bottom with veggies such as carrots, onions, steamed lettuce, and diced scallions. The total of the bowl was $6.95 and it comes with a free drink, what a bargain! This has to be a favorite because of how delicious it is and how many flavors there is in this bowl we were genuinely surprised on how filling this dish is. We absolutely recommend this dish if you aren’t all about sushi or fish overall.

California Roll

The California Roll is also good quality, fresh and with a hint of sweetness this price is very reasonable $4.50. Although it’s a simple roll, it is a good beginner roll if you want to try sushi for the first time. It has crab meat, cucumber, and avocado and just like the other rolls it tastes very fresh. Often times, people think this roll is very bland and boring but the owner includes a sauce on the side that makes the role a whole lot better.

The owner , Johnny, often works by himself making the food and serving tables. So there can be a wait but the food gets to you in about 15-20 min. The experience of eating at Yo! Sushi is very nice and the food is really great. If you’ve ever wanted to try sushi or are just in the mood for something new, you should stop by.

Yo! Sushi is at 2639 W Edinger Ave in Santa Ana, right next to the Subway on the corner of Fairview and Edinger. It is open 7 days a week, hours do vary on weekends.
