I remember stepping into Godinez for the first time thinking “I won’t be here for long.” I had only done the lottery because my best friend had convinced me to do it. I got in, she didn’t. And the irony of my high school years began.

You see since I thought that I wasn’t going to last at Godinez, I didn’t try to keep my grades up or even go to class. It got to the point where a friend and I ditched for a month. I eventually paid the consequences (Saturday School isn’t fun guys) and didn’t ditch again.

My sophomore year was also the year of facing the aftermath of my actions; and that involved night school. The good thing was that I was actually interested in fixing my freshman year mistakes. In the process of trying to mend my mistakes, I had the privilege to get to know  my counselor and have him help me through my struggles. Gerry Oxx helped me grow in my academic life by kicking my butt (not literally) and telling me “Get your act together. At the end of the day it’s your future.”

Junior year I joined journalism not because I wanted to, but because again, Oxx wanted me to try new things, so I did. Journalism was life changing. I made friends who showed me so many valuable lessons like always being on top of my things and to “always strive  to be the best.” I will always carry with me.

That same year  I was in concert choir and we took a “Superior” (highest rank for choirs) home and I was proud that our choir worked so hard to get that award. We did it. Music also showed me that there is always room to improve. My choir teacher Jeanette McMahon taught me to follow my passions and job opportunities will come to you (there are many people that believe you can’t live off of a music career).

High school has not been easy for me at all. But I had so many amazing people that helped me and encouraged me to join events that I’d never thought I’d join. One of the greatest things that I did in high school was joining the annual spring musicals. Doing “Fiddler of the Roof,” “The Sound of Music,” and “Into the Woods” was the absolute highlight of high school for me.

Now as a senior, I’m incredibly proud to say that I am part of the advanced choir of our school, the secretary of journalism and currently actually giving my all to end a strong year. I’ve learned so many valuable things these four years.

Now, college is the next stop and yes, I’m scared to step into this new journey but I will always remember what helped me through difficult decisions. Ask yourself while you’re at Godinez,  “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” And then go do it.
