The summer reading for 2018 has been selected and out of 1,300 plus votes from students and staff the book “Need” is the winner.

The summer reading book “Need” was chosen by votes from freshmen, sophomores, and juniors through email sent to the entire school. There was a possible of three selections: “Of Sound Mind,” “Salt to the Sea,” and “Need.” Half the votes for “Need” won.  “Salt of the Sea” got 30.4% of the vote while “Of Sound Mind” received only 20% and “Need” the remaining 49.6%.

The class with the most impact on the choice were freshmen who were 44% of the votes out of 1,300 students who participated.

The book “Need” is characterized as a cyber thriller with many twists and turns that will have you gripped to the story.

“One aspect about the book that is interesting is it grabs your attention from certain points in it,” said English teacher Suzanne Pruden. “The book is full of twists and turns which can change how you view things such as characters in it,” continued Pruden.

“Need” is about teens and for teens. The book explores the difference between wants and needs and depicts a new social media site that actually pits high school students against each other. There are real issues, including violence and the need for empathy.

Will people like it? There will be many students who will be intrigued by the story and others will be frustrated by characters or a plot choice, but that is what makes literature.

The summer read will be distributed to English classes by May 25th.

According to the votes many people belittled ¨Of Sound Mind¨,it could have been because of the cover, but it is scurrilous to judge a book by its cover. Unless they were alacrity to read ¨Need¨because they actually read the book review.

Our summer reading book is not one I have imagined myself reading. In my opinion, reading books about history catches my eye more often. I voted on a book of one of the World Wars. The book has been read by some of my friends from other schools and it is highly recommended by these teens. I can concur that this is a book that I will enjoy with these recommendations. On the novel’s cover, it advertises that teens love the book which I find very intriguing.
