With various accounts of assault and harassment surfacing in the media, people might wonder if there is something that can be done to protect themselves in the event that they are attacked. I had the same thought in my mind and to my luck, I found out there is a new Self-Defense Class at Godinez Fundamental High School. On November 3rd, I had my first lesson.

Self-Defense had its first class on October 21st, and Senior Alexander Martinez has been instructing students every Friday.

Self Defense club takes place right outside the Grizzly Lounge, located on the second floor next to the Godinez clocktower. At around 3:00 p.m., Martinez started class and caught me up on a few basics I had missed. He first showed me the stance needed when practicing any moves of self defense and continued to teach me various ways of getting out of a tight grasp on my wrist. Something so simple could be a lifesaver for someone who just wants to escape a dangerous situation.

Martinez started self defense his freshman year of high school, having had a passion to learn martial arts ever since middle school.

“I was influenced by Bruce Lee,” he begins, “he was my major idol for martial arts.”

Martinez hopes that the students take some of his self defense lessons with them to their future universities. Being thrown into the adult world of college can be very overwhelming, with unknown dangers lurking- having an idea of how to protect yourself is valuable. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center states that about one in five women and one in 16 men are assaulted while in college.

While I was learning these new skills, I realized these were skills and techniques that I would keep with me for the rest of my life. No one is guaranteed absolute safety- I know this, and that is why I have joined a club that can at least teach me some ways to provide myself that safety.

Self Defense Club meets every Friday at the Grizzly Lounge from 3:00 to 4:00pm.
